These are the 7 most popular types of heating

In addition to the usual heating systems with gas or oil, there are now numerous alternatives for filling your home with heat in the most ecological way possible. But not only the issue of sustainability, but also the currently rapidly rising prices for oil and gas make the decision for a heating system anything but easy. We will help you find the right heating system for your home and present the most common types of heating here, starting with the most environmentally friendly.

The heat pump

Heat pumps belong to the newer heating systems. They are characterized especially by their environmentally friendly energy product.

Heat pumps absorb geothermal heat, the heat of groundwater or the heat of the air outside a building at a low temperature and inside the building they release it at a higher temperature. Electrical energy must be supplied to drive the heat pump.

The photovoltaic

Generating energy from solar power is one of the most promising heating methods with a view to a more sustainable future. The CO2 emissions here are almost zero. Using so-called solar panels on the roof, the free and unlimited energy of the sun is absorbed, converted into heat and used directly for heating. However, this heating system requires precise planning: solar thermal energy can only be used efficiently if the collectors are aligned exactly.

Wood heating

Heating with wood is the oldest heating method in the world. Wood as a fuel is one of the renewable raw materials and is therefore less affected by large price fluctuations than fossil fuels such as oil or gas.

Wood heating systems convince with a high performance. The heat energy is generated by the combustion of the wood, which usually happens at an ignition temperature between 280 and 340 degrees Celsius and is set in motion by the supply of oxygen.

A supply of firewood is required for the operation of a wood heating system. To ensure constant heat, wood must be added regularly.

The gas heating

Most households are currently supplied with heat by a gas heating system. It is therefore considered a classic among heating systems. This is mainly due to its reliability and efficiency. Gas heating systems are equally suitable for new buildings and modernizations. All that is required for their operation is a gas connection.

However, gas prices have risen sharply in recent months, which speaks against this heating system. In addition, fossil-fuelled heating systems are expected to be banned throughout Switzerland from 2043.

The electric heating

An electric heater is connected to electricity and then heated by means of heating wires and coils. A fan ensures that this heat is then distributed in the room. This happens within a very short time. In addition, an electric heater can be used flexibly, since it usually comes as a compact heating device.

The purchase costs for an electric heater are admittedly low. However, due to high electricity prices, it does not necessarily serve as an efficient heating system in the long run.

The oil heating

Almost as common as the gas heating system is oil heating. It is one of the oldest heating systems and is thus considered a technology that has been developed and thought out over decades. Oil heating systems are efficient, economical and, in modern variants, save resources.

Compared to gas heating, heating with oil does not require a gas connection. However, the tank of an oil heating system is bulkier. The heating oil is transported from this tank to the heating system via the oil pipeline, where it is sprayed and burned. The resulting energy heats the heating water, which in turn fills a room with heat.

The combined heat and power plant (CHP)

This heating system converts gas, fuel oil or wood into energy in a combustion engine. Compared to gas or oil heating systems, a combined heat and power unit produces not only heat, but also electricity. This can easily be used in the everyday electricity consumption of a household. Combined heat and power units are particularly worthwhile for large rooms that need to be heated.
